First and foremost, go Bears! I care deeply about my hometown sports teams and therefore much of my pride rests on their ability to throw, catch, and run with a ball! They still have Walter Payton, right? Based on my football knowledge that comes from many years of playing Tecmo Bowl on NES, I advised the offensive coordinator that he should rely heavily on Play #3 (which is right+B), as it always heralded many-a-TD for myself. He obviously did not listen to me, and the Bears sucked bigtime.

And now onto business. Standup is still going well, and I’ve been performing regularly at the Squire (as always) and have now played at Club 404 on Broadway, the Redfish in Boulder, and last Wednesday, Burnt Toast in Boulder. Not a great show, but I did meet a super cute girl named Tess who was lovely and charming.

I’ve been writing new material every week; I try to do at least 50% new stuff at the Squire each time I perform, and that forces me to write all the time. My material spans many different topics thus far: 16th street mall, wearing headphones on a bus, the army and marines, snowdays and sledding, porn, and so forth. Performing standup comedy is like taking the bad parts out of acting and music. I’m beyond excited that I started doing it, although I am a big fan of the other arts.

On that note, I’m romanticizing the idea of moving to California when my lease is up in November. I’ve come to the realization that I don’t want to be stuck in a PC support job for the rest of my life, regardless of how much money I’m making doing it. Performance and media is what I’m into (music, standup, movies, tv, radio), and if I’m going to give that passion of mine a real shot, then this is the time in my life in which it’s most appropriate to go for it. I feel kind of stagnant in my current position (as you can tell in my last post), and I’ve begun writing a song about not becoming the next “American Idle”. Clever… I know, I know. I’ll be here all week. I don’t expect to get to California and be a movie/tv/rockstar in a week, or even a year… that’s ridiculous and unrealistic. What I do expect is to get a bottom-of-the-food-chain job somewhere, and gradually work my way up, while working on writing standup and music with Danno pretty steadily. As I’m sitting in slushy Denver, going to my good-enough-for-right-now IT job through the car-exhaust-brown snow, Dan is in 70 degree LA IMing me from his balcony and working as a writer’s assistant on the Andy Milonakis show. One of his duties last week was to help think of pranks to pull on unsuspecting pizza delivery guys. More interesting and creative than upgrading the office to Windows Vista? I vote yay.

And finally, I’m flying home to Chicago in mid-March to visit the family, and I emailed a few comedy venues to see if I could get a spot while I was in town. I got a featured 15 minute spot at the Pressure Cafe on March 17th (St Patty’s Day!). If enough people come to see me, I get some cash for the gig, too. So, all Chicagoland Gees, let me know if you want to come laugh and I’ll give you the details.
